Paper Stories

For a commercial assignment, I find myself taking photographs in a paper recycling center. After separating paper from cardboard, the paper is first soaked, then pressed, and finally tied with wire into bales, ready to be sent to paper mills to become recycled paper.

Apart from the beauty of seeing these tall walls of paper in a thousand colors, there seems to be nothing else. But just as I am about to finish my work, it happen that I notice a sort of frame in one of these bales, through which a hidden world is revealed — a world created by the accidental layering of sheets of paper.

I am left speechless, and so I ask the owner of the company if I may return to take more photographs. My search is not often fruitful, but when it is, it feels like a kind of magic — a reward for all the times I found nothing.
